The Noosa Festival of Surfing is an iconic event that celebrates surf culture and is the largest event of its kind in Australia.
The festival, which has been taking place in a world surfing reserve, Noosa Heads, for decades, is a must-attend event for anyone passionate about the sport.
Noosa Festival of Surfing, 2025 Dates, Event Categories, Skate Fest, QLD
Join us on the 14th – 23rd March 2025 at First Point as we celebrate 34 years of this iconic surfing festival held in Noosa Heads, Queensland.
The Noosa Malibu Club founded it back in 1992. It started as an amateur surfing competition, previously known as the Noosa Malibu Classic. Club members then invited their friends to surf the famous right-hand breaks at Noosa, but eventually, the event grew in popularity for local longboarders. By 1996, they introduced a professional surfing division and changed their name to the Noosa Festival of Surfing by 1998.
Today, this festival celebrates the heart of surfing in Noosa, aptly so, as it has been a famous surfing location since the ’50s. Visitors come from near and far to witness more kinds of surfing during the event, including dogs hanging ten, tandem surfers, bodysurfing, professional longboarders, and so much more.
The energy is palpable, with crowds cheering them on from the festival village where a terrific party occurs. There will be a beach bar, cold drinks, a relaxed vibe, activities, and lots of great food and music, so there’s truly something for everyone, even spectators.
Everyone is encouraged to try surfing during the festival. Whether you’re a senior, junior, or in-between, all are welcome. Competitions are held in the following categories: Men’s Logger Pro, Women’s Logger Pro, Noserider, Men’s Open, and Women’s Open.
Noosa’s perfect waves and barrel sections are ideal for sharing the ocean with friends and having a great time in and out of the sea.
The Noosa Festival of Surfing is a legendary surfing event you shouldn’t miss.

What started as a tiny Monday night party in Pucca (a small Indian Gin restaurant in Noosa) quickly became the longest-standing house music night the Sunshine Coast has ever seen.
With such a strong South American and European community in Noosa, the Loco boys were able to connect and consistently play music that our town had never seen.
After taking over and selling out numerous venues on the Sunshine Coast, we’re stoked to announce that Loco Mondays will be making its debut during the Noosa Festival of Surfing.
With a stacked line-up featuring international and local DJs, this is one not to be missed. The Rip Curl Locals Day
For generations, there has been a healthy rivalry in the waves between longboarders, shortboarders and surf club members. Rarely does it boil over into anything more than a little friendly banter, but the differences, and the boundaries, remain.
Several years ago, Noosa surfer Dane Wilson noticed this distinct segregation and searched for a way to overcome it. His answer: the Locals Day.
Incorporated into the Noosa Festival’s celebration of surfing, The Rip Curl Locals Day brings together teams from each stable – the Noosa Malibu Club, Noosa Boardriders and Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club – in a day of fun, camaraderie and friendly competition.
Not your conventional surf contest, The Rip Curl Locals Day incorporates such events as softboard shorebreak bashes, relay races and other divisions based not so much on skill but instead, inspired by a kindred love of ocean activities.
2025 welcomes back the Rip Curl Locals Day to the sands of Noosa’s Main Beach for another day of fun, laughter, team spirit and, above everything, a connection across the boundaries of how we enjoy the ocean in our own, unique ways.
To participate in the locals’ day, please meet Dane and the gang out the front of the Beach Bar from 3pm on Tuesday 18th March. Participation is entirely free and all are welcome to join whether you belong to a surf / boardriding club or not.
She to Sea Art Show @ Halse Lodge
She to Sea is an all-female art exhibition that has run in conjunction with the Noosa Festival of Surfing since 2018. It celebrates women coming together to share their love for the ocean, surf, art, photography, and surf wear.
Sunshine Coast Artist and surf photographer Tracy Naughton of ‘Let Me Sea’ had the idea for She to Sea a few years back as a way of women supporting each other through their work and passion for the ocean. ‘I am so stoked to be gearing up for our 8th annual exhibition, it is so important to me and all the girls involved, we have some new-comers this year and we can’t wait to share new work.’
Tracy’s idea originally stemmed from a desire to belong to something larger than herself, to build a network for women in the creative surf industry. “We are beyond excited to welcome some of the leading women’s surf photographers and artisans”.
Halse Lodge will host the She to Sea art show on Tuesday, 18th March with a 5pm start.
Halse Lodge has an amazing bar and restaurant setup. Make sure you come along, check out some amazing art and enjoy a meal and a drink.
By the way, don’t forget to attend Tracy’s mini market located in the beach bar on Thursday 20th March. A great opportunity for people to shop for little knick knacks for home, art, surf apparel and more.

The Life and Death of Westerly Windina
In the 1960s and 70s, Australian surfer Peter Drouyn was a towering figure in surfing. He not only dominated the international competitive ranks but also revolutionized the way modern surf competitions are conducted. His introduction of the man-on-man format brought excitement and direct competition to the sport, marking a significant departure from the traditional, more chaotic contest formats.
Drouyn’s boundless ambition was evident; he played a key role in introducing surfing to China, significantly expanding the sport’s global reach and impact.
But behind the macho surf star persona and the adoration of contemporaries was an athlete who felt ostracized by a culture that was often hypermasculine and sexist. In the 1980s, Drouyn drifted away from competitive surfing and disappeared from the public eye.
In 2008, years after nearly drowning in a traumatic and life-changing surfing accident, Drouyn suddenly resurfaced by coming out as a trans woman on national television. Her new name, she said, was Westerly Windina. “It was a supernova,” Westerly said of her gender awakening. “It just kicked in one night, and suddenly Peter went; Westerly was there.” The surf community, and Australia at large, were astonished. Though she’d once been a top-tier athlete with sponsorships and a burgeoning acting career, Westerly was now living in public housing on the Gold Coast – alone, poor, and often taunted by her neighbours.
The Life and Death of Westerly Windina explores Westerly’s upbringing and her years as a surfing titan and follows her into a new chapter as she searches for acceptance from friends, family, a still-hyper-masculine sport, and most importantly, from herself.
A special screening of The Life and Death of Westerly Windina will take place at the Noosa J Theatre on Thursday, March 20th, as part of the Noosa Festival of Surfing presented by the Surf Film Archive.
