Walk along Rainbow Beach past rocks, caves and freshwater springs to the great coloured sands that soar 80 metres over the beach -about 2km south of the Rainbow Beach SLSC. The complex array of tones and hues of sands that have been exposed by erosion contain as many as 72 different colours. It is thought that the sands have been forming since the last ice age due to iron oxide and leached vegetable dyes.
Surrounding the beach is some family-friendly parks with modern play equipment, and there are also lookouts on the shoreline to take in the surrounding views. In terms of facilities, there is a large toilet block with changing rooms, showers to wash all of the sand off, public BBQs and picnic tables.
The beach is located at the northern end of the main street in town, so plenty of shops are around to grab lunch or grab some groceries to take home. Some of the shops on the main street include a bakery, butcher, pharmacy, surf shop, souvenir store, restaurants, cafes, pub, bottleshop, and a Foodworks supermarket.
Rainbow Beach is a popular attraction that should not be missed.
