Construction for the lighthouse began on May 1978. Later in the year, it was finally automated then opened in September 1979. The lighthouse is a concrete tower designed in a pentagonal shape, with a concrete lantern mounted. It’s 32.4 metres in height, and the light is powered through numerous sealed beam lamps, while a red sector helps vessels enter the Mooloolaba Harbour. Before it was built, two other lighthouses helped guide ships as they entered Moreton Bay in the 1890s.

The Point Cartwright Lighthouse is not just historically significant, but the area surrounding it is also worth visiting because of its immense beauty. Visitors can be assured of a quiet place to enjoy the outdoors, including the beaches where they can swim and fish, while the grassy areas are terrific places to go on a picnic while you take in the views. The natural bushland is a wonderful area to go on a walk as well. Explore the balustrade found on the cliff edge, where you will see a small memorial that pays tribute to individuals who have passed on.

The beach of Point Cartwright has also become popular for surfing. If you can climb up the cliffs located in the coastal headland, you will be rewarded with incredible views of Mooloolaba, Mount Coolum, the Mooloolah River, and even Kawana Beach down south. During certain times of the year, it’s common to witness migrating humpback whales and some turtles.

Point Cartwright Lighthouse is an excellent destination that families can spend a few hours visiting, followed by a relaxing picnic.
