The mountains formed through millions of years of evolution by volcanic lava, and today these peaks are best explored through the many walking tracks that lead to viewing points. There are 12 mountains in the national park, and while not all of them can be climbed, there are circuits or walking tracks that can be used to explore them.

Located around an hour away by car from Brisbane or Noosa, the Glass House Mountains National Park is ideal for a day trip or a weekend away. The tracks are good, not just for walking but also for cycling, abseiling, and horse riding. There are six small towns within the 11 mountains, all of which are connected by country roads and train lines. The famous Australia Zoo, founded by Steve Irwin, is also located in the area.

Hiking or walking around the mountains is the best way to take in the sights. The many circuits around the peaks can cater to people of varying skill levels, so be sure to choose those that suit your own fitness ability. Don’t forget to stop by the visitor centre, which is the best place to learn about the mountains and the various attractions. You can also get a map and brochure or use the free Wi-Fi to research your adventures here.

Alternatively, you can also rent a car and go on a scenic drive along the back roads. The Blackall Range Tourist Drive is located north of the mountains and is famed for being one of the most beautiful drives in Australia.

The Glass House Mountains National Park is a must-visit while on the Sunshine Coast.
