The Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra is a living aviation museum, home to an impressive array of old aircraft, gliders, helicopters, photographs, artefacts, books, and several interesting kinds of machinery. The main highlight here is the aircraft displays that were used by the military, as well as passenger planes from Queensland Airlines, Ansett Airlines, and Airlines of Tasmania. In addition, they also have agricultural and training aircraft, making it a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts.
The Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre is a fascinating place to learn about Eumundi. It’s one of the smallest in the Sunshine Coast museums, but because of its interesting displays, more than 10,000 people visit it each year. The centre was established in 1991 and through the years they have evolved into an incredible museum. Their displays include memorabilia dating back to some of the first settlements on the coast, and visitors can explore the many interpretive displays on site.
The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology features world-class historical artefacts; many of which are European. Its origins are traced back to 1934, all the way to England where Abbey Folk Park, which was the first history museum in Britain and was established by Rev. JSM Ward. It was eventually transferred to its current location in Caboolture and now it’s a top tourist destination prized for its relics. Many of the displays date back 500,000 years, spanning prehistoric Europe through modern times.
The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum is a widely popular museum that tells the story of Gympie’s rich gold-mining history. As the town was pivotal in boosting the economy of Queensland during the gold rush, the museum tells the story of how important locals helped create the Gympie of today. There are 30 displays that are spread out through 15 buildings, ensuring hours of history and fun for visitors.
